0003 The Evolution of Traditional to New Media (Lecture)

           EVOLUTION OF MEDIA

Today, we discussed about the evolution of media as the time passed by. In here we examined technology or resources available during the prehistoric age, the industrial age, the electronic age, and the new or digital age. Eventually, I have learned a lot of technologies invented in the past centuries and that media has long existed and is evident from various cave paintings and carvings from all across the world.

The Cuevas de las Manos cave series in Santa Cruz province of Argentina also known as ‘cave of hands’. The cave named after paintings of hands dates between 9000 and 13000 years ago. The caves also contain paintings of hunting scenes, animals, geometric shapes and zigzag patterns.

Magura cave in the Vidin province of Bulgaria is one of the largest caves in the country. The walls of the cave decorated with outstanding paintings date back to Neolithic and early Bronze age period. The paintings depict deities, animals and hunting techniques of ancestors of the site. There is also a solar calendar on the wall of Magura cave that represent 366 days and five different festivals. It is the oldest known solar calender discovered in the European continent.

Based on what I have learned from our class, this is my own tabulation of how media evolved from the very start:

Given the available media that we now have in the world, what are its roles and functions in a democratic society?

Media plays a very important role in a society. It serves as the support system of democracy. It is through media that people becomes aware of the things happening around his/her country’s politics and economy.  It is through radios, television, social media sites and a lot more where candidates and politicians promote their platforms and promises to the people to help the people vote and choose the right people for a democratic country. Most importantly, media exposes the gap and the inadequacy in the law and administration to the people which eventually helps the government to meditate and resolve these problems to make the country safer and friendlier to live in.

In what way does media affect your life (personal, professional, academic, social, others)?

All through my existence, media has played a crucial role in my living for it has influenced every aspect of my life. I consider media as my best source to know what is happening in our world. Media has affected the way I live through the exchange of information that it has given. An example of this would be the different advertisements on TV to buy products, the news about current events, the answer to a certain homework, and the opinions of people on different blogs and social media. These information will influence me and lead me to change my views on these different aspects.
