In your own words, define Internet of Things
Internet of Things (IoT) is a
network of internet-connected objects. It may be computers, gadgets, objects, things
or anything under the sun that will be able to collect and exchange data using
embedded sensors. These are objects that "talk" to each other to be
able to gather and exchange information in order to create an action. In here
all things will be connected. It allows for virtually endless opportunities and
connections to take place within a community without any human intervention.
What
brought this theory about?
People have
been fascinated with gadgets that function on different scales for decades but
it’s only been in the past several years that people were able to see its true
potential. The idea and concept of IoT evolved as wireless Internet became more
pervasive and embedded sensors grew in sophistication and people began
understanding that technology could be a personal tool as well as a
professional one. The term “Internet of Things” began in the late 1990s by an entrepreneur
Kevin Ashton, who’s one of the founders of the Auto-ID Center at MIT. He was
part of a team that discovered how to link objects to the Internet through an
RFID tag. He said he first used the phrase “Internet of Things” in a
presentation he made in 1999 – and the term has stuck around ever since.
Do you like
the concept of IoT ? Why or why not?
To be
honest, I really like the concept of IoT. It makes it easier for people to communicate and do all things simultaneously. It makes things efficient for
people and I’m pretty sure the traffic in our country would be less heavier
than expected. Thanks to IoT, it will connect cars with other cars and it will
diversify them to other routes so that they would not be congested into one.
Though I
find IoT interesting and fun, I also think scientists and analytics should also
consider the privacy risk. They must first develop a technique where the privacy
of people will not be affected due to the sharing and exchange of information. This
I think is the downfall of IoT, especially when viruses are being involved and
passed on to other devices.
In what
situations do you encounter IoT in the Philippines?
One
situation that I have encountered IoT in the Philippines are the escalators
found in Century City Mall in Makati. Those escalators there does not move
unless its sensor senses a person moving towards it. Another situation that I
have encountered was when I was in Okada, Manila with my friends. It was the
night of our Grad Ball and we decided to pay a hotel room for us to stay
overnight. The hotel room was “magical”. The room has its own IPAD that
controls almost everything in the room including the lights, the tv, the room
temperature, the shower and anything you can see inside.
How do you
think IoT will evolve and affect Filipino society in the next 3 to 5 years?
IoT will
definitely have a great impact and effect in the lives of the Filipinos. It
will surely decrease the workload of every office worker and it will surely
have a great effect on our road and traffic systems. IoT will definitely help
in increasing our country’s economic value. I also think it has minor negative
effects like the people might get lazier when IoT happens because the people
might just be dependent on technology in doing some of their daily routines.
What do you
think is the relationship / cause and effect of IoT in media and information
literacy?
Through
IoT, individuals will be able to engage with media and other information
providers effectively due to the data and sharing information between devices.
This will then increase the media and information literacy rate of the people.
With these, sharing of information will be so much easier than expected.
